Before the University of Northern Colorado was called the University of Northern Colorado, it was known as the Colorado State Normal School. Colleges that trained teachers used to be known as "normal schools." I don't know why. Let that be your useless trivia for the day.
One thing I didn't realized that I missed from the last time I worked in a fast food restaurant was the feeling that I was the most normal one there. Luckily my new job has rekindled that feeling. Now, most people who know me know that I have always prided myself on not being normal, so why would I revel in normality? Well the kind of normal I strive for is listening to cool bands you've never heard of, or playing with Star Wars action figures like I was 11. I like old TV shows and, though I have a penis, also watch Gilmore Girls. When I'm bored in class I imagine well choreographed Jedi-inspired fight scenes unfolding in my classroom. I have a blog that no one reads.
My co-workers on the other hand, have bullet wounds. They are tall, burly African American women that sing Usher songs when no customers are around and wonder who their baby's daddy is. They are on parole. They are all very nice people, but I feel so wonderfully white-bread, raised in the suburbs that it makes me happy.
I feel very safe in my normality, and I like it.
